Synopsis
The mission was sham. The murders were real.

What if one of the greatest space adventures was really a hoax? The whole world is watching the first manned flight to Mars prepare. Suddenly, its astronauts are taken from the craft to an abandoned desert hanger where NASA's director tells them their life support systems have failed. Because of the mission's success is crucial to future space programs, he orders them to take part in a simulated Martian landing as cameras roll. If they refuse, their families will be harmed.
The phony flight goes well until an uninformed NASA technician spots a computer discrepency. He mentions it to a reporter friend who smells a story and starts to investigate. When their rocket disintegrates and the world thinks them dead, the astronauts realize their lives are in danger. They escape and separate- hoping one of them will survive to expose the sensational fraud.

Capricorn One - B - 3 out of 5  (8/1/2005)
I hadn't seen this movie since I was about 8 years old (1979), and I was rather suprised how well it holds up as a matinee-style thriller. This is actually one of Peter Hyams best films, along with Outland and 2010. And I had completely forgotten that Elliot Gould makes a major appearance in this movie, as the main character in a parallel plot, which runs in tandem with the astronauts and their delima, throughout the film. This is a well-constructed plot, and although many suppo   more >>

Water or O.J.? - 3 out of 5  (10/9/2000)
I was skeptical about a movie costing less than $10 from the 70's with O.J. Simpson in it, but the plot and storyline seemed interesting, so I bought it. It was worth it, especially the scene in the desert with O.J. crawling around saying, "water... water." You gotta get the movie, at least for that!   more >>

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE MARS - 4.25 out of 5  (1/20/1999)
Written and directed by Peter Hyams, CAPRICORN ONE was released in the theaters in 1978, one year after STAR WARS' twister. While George Lucas, with his revolutionary movie, had no other purpose than sheer entertainment, Peter Hyams brought to the audience an adult sci-fi movie. I believe that CAPRICORN ONE is a masterpiece showing that Peter Hyams was, a long time ago, a director with an enormous potential. Unfortunately, this talent has been wasted since then. The desert scenes are frigh   more >>
